21st Century Stem Trailer Visits Garden County School

By Abigail Loyd, Victor Rueda, Blake Dean, Thomas Griffin, and Rainee Olson

On March 17th, Jason Strapman brought the 21st Century Stem Trailer to visit our Garden County Jr/Sr High School, to teach our Jr High School students about STEM in agriculture. He taught us how to wire pivots, how they are using drones to help farmers watch over their crops and animals, as well as teaching us about some new technology they are using for tractors. Then he taught us how to take lug nuts off of a tire, then put them back on.

New technology and newer generation are helping the older generations of farmers. 21st Century said in 2030 the goal is to have half of the farms they service running autonomous tractors. These tractors will be unmanned in the field. The newer generation can help the older generation, by teaching them how to program their tractors. When the tractors are automated, the older farmers will have to work less, so they don’t get hurt because of their old bodies. That is how technology and the new generation can help older farms.

For one of the many useful learning activities that we learned about, we learned how to operate a drill. We used this drill to take lug nuts off of a tire, then we put them back on. We said that it would take one of our classmates 25 seconds to take 5 lug nuts off, it took him about 35 seconds. To put them back on, we learned that they had to go in a certain order so that the tire would be seated straight and not wobble. It only took about 15 seconds to put them back on in a diagonal pattern.

The wiring needs to be completed correctly to run a pivot correctly. We learned that mistakes in wiring are costly, and technicians utilize STEM knowledge to complete their jobs correctly. We got to check on the wiring by looking at schematics to find errors and perform tug tests on the wires.

The drone had a unique camera on it. The reason the camera was unique was that it had a heat vision and a setting that would allow it to go to a certain destination. The camera moved up and down with a controller that was controlled by the person. The drone was able to land itself. There is a certain app that the person logs into in order to control the drone. This is due to safety precautions. There were guards around the propellers, so the wings didn’t break when impacted by the wall or other objects. The disadvantage of the drone is that the drone is unable to fly when there are high winds.
