Garden County Junior High Science Fair Winners

On January 31, 2023, the Garden County Junior High Students hosted the annual Science Fair.  The students all tested a hypothesis of their choice and supported a claim based on evidence and reasoning.  The winners will represent Garden County at the Nebraska Junior Academy of Science Panhandle Regional Fair on March 7, 2023, in Scottsbluff.  The students tested a variety of topics.

Sixth Grade
From left to right:
Colt Roberson, Ava Kupper, and Kadern Allen

First Place - Ava Kupper

  • Ava found that meal worms will eat the most styrofoam in an environment that provides more water for them.
Second Place - Colt Roberson

  • Colt made a slingshot from different sizes of rubber bands to launch a force cart.  He found that the larger rubber bands apply more force to the cart and cause it to roll the farthest.
Third Place - Kadern Allen

  • Does music impact a dog’s behavior?  Kadren found that it does.  His dogs reacted more to music with a faster tempo.

Seventh Grade

From left to right:

Abigail Loyd, Chanley Loomis, and Kenley Dehning

First Place - Chanley Loomis

  • Chanley wanted to know if the thickness of a water balloon would impact how high it bounced.  She found that it did not.
Second Place - Kenley Dehning
  • Kenley examined how different manures affected plant growth.  She found that the manure that allowed the water to drain grew the best plants.

Third Place - Abigail Loyd
  • Does antibacterial soap really kill more germs?  Abigail found that it does.

Eighth Grade
From left to right:
Javis Underwood, Jase Roberson, Kole Fornander

First Place - Jase Roberson

  • Jase examined if right brain and left brain people observed optical illusions the same way.

Second Place - Javis Underwood

  • Javis wanted to find out if his spiked track shoes made him run a hundred meters faster than his cross trainers.  He concluded that they do.

Third Place - Kole Fornander

  • Kole compared how far light and heavy bat to see which one would hit a baseball the farthest.  He found that the heavy bat hit the ball the farthest, even with a slower swing.
